Understanding the Saints

Who Are the Saints?

Beloved Followers of Christ

The saints are holy men and women who loved God with all their heart, soul, and strength. They are the heroes of our faith — ordinary people who answered God's extraordinary call and became living witnesses to Christ's love.

Intercessors in Heaven

The saints in heaven continue to pray for us. Just as we ask friends on earth to pray for us, we can ask the saints to intercede before God's throne. They love us as brothers and sisters in Christ and joyfully bring our prayers to God.

Honored, Not Worshipped

Catholics honor the saints with love and respect, but we worship God alone. The word "saint" means "holy one" — all holiness comes from God. The saints are heroic examples of God's grace at work in human lives.

Why the Saints Matter

  • They show us that holiness is possible for everyone
  • They inspire us to follow Jesus in daily life
  • They teach us virtues: courage, charity, humility, purity
  • They are part of the Communion of Saints — one family in Christ
  • They come from every nation, culture, and vocation
  • They remind us that God loves us and calls us to holiness

Did You Know?

"Saint" comes from the Latin word "sanctus," meaning "holy" or "consecrated." In the Catholic Church, a saint is someone officially recognized for living a life of heroic virtue and now rests in the presence of God in heaven.

Pray With the Saints

Prayer for the Intercession of the Saints

"Heavenly Father, You have surrounded us with a great cloud of witnesses — the saints who have run the race before us. Grant that we, inspired by their example and strengthened by their prayers, may run with perseverance the race that is set before us. May we grow in holiness, trust in Your love, and one day join them in eternal glory with Your Son, Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen."

Prayer to Imitate the Saints

"Lord Jesus, You call each of us to holiness. Help me to imitate the virtues of the saints — their faith, hope, charity, humility, and courage. Give me the grace to follow You more faithfully each day, to serve others with love, and to grow in union with You. May my life be a witness to Your goodness and a reflection of Your glory. Amen."

Prayer to Choose a Patron Saint

"Holy Saint (name), I ask you to be my guide and protector. Teach me to love as you loved, to serve as you served, and to trust in God's providence as you did. May your example inspire me to grow in holiness and closer to Our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen."

Follow the Saints

The saints are not distant figures from history — they are our brothers and sisters in Christ, cheering us on as we run the race of faith. Their lives remind us that holiness is not just for a few, but is God's call to every soul.

As you continue your journey of faith, let the saints inspire you. Ask for their prayers, learn from their virtues, and trust that the same God who worked miracles in their lives desires to do extraordinary things in yours.

Called to Holiness

"Be holy, for I am holy." — 1 Peter 1:16

Every saint began as an ordinary person who answered an extraordinary call. The same call is extended to you. Through prayer, the sacraments, and God's grace, you too are invited to become a saint — to reflect the love of Christ to a world in desperate need of His light.

"The glory of God is a human being fully alive."

— St. Irenaeus of Lyons
